SMC mold refers to a thermosetting composite material made up of a resin (typically polyester), glass fibers, fillers, and additives, used in compression molding to create complex, strong, and dimensionally stable parts, often seen in automotive components, electrical enclosures, and appliance parts due to its high strength, heat resistance, and electrical insulation properties.

☼ What is SMC ?  

SMC is sheet moulding compound.
SMC is a mixture of polymer resin, inert fillers, fiber reinforcement, catalysts, pigments, stabilizers, release agents, and thickeners. 
Manufacturing of SMC is a continuous in-line process. The base components of liquids and solids (paste) are bulk mixed and continuously metered onto to the surface of a carrier/barrier film, coating the film surface. Two mirror imaged metering stations operate simultaneously. 
One of the paste-coated carrier films are then layered with chopped fibers. The 2 carrier webs, paste & fiber are then brought together in the compaction section, where the sandwich-like layered components are kneaded into one homogenous compound sheet. 
The sheet is then fan folded into a container and stored in a controlled environment where maturation takes place, on its way to a specified viscosity.
In recent years, we devoted to research and develop processing SMC moulds of various products, such as auto front& rear bumper, front&rear door panels, electrical appliance, bathtub, container and dishware and so on.

☼ What Is SMC Mold?

SMC mould is high-strength, high hardness mould made of steel plates with polished surfaces to ensure the surface quality of the SMC moulded parts. The main feature of this mould is that it is made by using a compression process in order to compress the SMC material into the final product. 

SMC compression moulding usually use a hydraulic press machine, and the cavity and core are fixed to the top and bottom platens. When the material is placed into the open mould, the platens close, the mould gets heated, and then the press pressure forces the SMC material to flow all over the mould.

☼ Key Considerations for SMC Mold Design and Optimization

SMC mould design follows similar rules as for any other production process with the plastic industry. But before you build a SMC mould, there are certain things need to be considered.The first and most important is shear edge.

Mould shrinkage

There are two shrinkage for SMC mould. Low profile class A part have a shrinkage of -0.05% to 0%.

Temperature system

SMC need heating channel instead of cooling. The working temperature of the mould is usually at 140 degree to 160 degree. When designing the temperature systme it is important to keep surface temperature within very close parameters. Mould will fill easier and produce parts with less warpage, and uniform surface appearance. The The mould can be heated by steam, or oil, or electricity or even high pressure water.

Compression Molds 

Compression molds are the most common type used in SMC molding. They are used to create parts by applying heat and pressure to the SMC material. The material is placed into a heated mold cavity, and pressure is applied to ensure the material flows and takes the shape of the mold.
 Applications:Automotive parts, electrical components, industrial equipment.

Transfer Molds

Transfer molds use a similar method to compression molding but are designed to transfer the SMC material from a chamber into the mold cavity. The material is heated in a separate chamber before being transferred under pressure into the mold. 
Applications:Complex or intricate parts with fine details.

Injection Molds

Injection molding involves injecting SMC material into a mold cavity under high pressure. This type of mold is used for producing smaller, precise components and is typically used when high-volume production is required.
Applications:Electronic devices, consumer goods, and small mechanical components.

Multi-Cavity Molds

Multi-cavity molds are designed with multiple cavities in a single mold tool, allowing for the simultaneous production of several parts in one cycle. This significantly improves production efficiency.

Insert Molds

Insert molds are designed to incorporate metal or other material inserts into the SMC mold. The inserts are placed in the mold before the SMC material is injected or compressed, allowing for the creation of parts with integrated features like threads or connectors.

Long Fiber-Reinforced Molds
