SMC Molding Process
SMC material is a sheet-like composite made of glass fiber and unsaturated resin. It offers excellent properties such as insulation, high-temperature resistance, fire resistance, UV resistance, and high impact/tensile strength. It maintains its performance well in both cold and hot environments, making it suitable for outdoor applications with UV and waterproofing requirements.
With high-dimensional stability and minimal shrinkage, it can be used in products with complex structures. It is widely applied in industries such as home appliances, industrial electrical equipment, aerospace, new energy, automotive, and construction. There are three types of SMC molding processes: SMC injection molding, SMC compression molding, and SMC transfer molding.

SMC Injection Molding:
SMC sheets are cut into pre-measured charges that fit the machine's barrel. The material is then mixed and pushed into the mold by the screw, where it cures and forms the product. Advantages of Injection Molding: complex product structures can be achieved, the molding cycle is fast, and the unit cost is low for multi-cavity products.
SMC Compression Molding:
SMC material is cut according to the product's weight and placed into the mold for Compression Molding. The biggest advantage of compression molding is high product strength, while the drawbacks include manual weighing, longer cycle times, higher unit costs, and simpler product structures.
SMC Transfer Molding:
Transfer molding is a hybrid between injection and compression molding. SMC sheets are cut into pre-measured charges that fit the machine's barrel, and then a plunger machine (without a screw) pushes the material into the mold. Since the material is not mixed by a screw, the glass fibers remain intact, resulting in strength close to that of compression-molded products. Advantages of plunger molding: high product strength, fast molding cycles, and low unit costs.
As SMC molding processes become increasingly automated and techniques continue to improve, they will better meet the demands of diverse products and markets.
