bmc molding manufacturerBMC Molding Processes

The BMC injection molding process basically follows the same rules as the injection mold. However, SMC and BMC molds also have different characteristics from injection molds, such as flow path, exhaust, heating, cavity pressure and balance, parting structure, mold steel used and precision, shrinkage and injection molds. Differently, the BMC mold is molded at a high temperature, and the plastic mold is molded at a normal temperature. There are three types of BMC molding processes: injection, transfer, and compression. Each of these molding processes are dependent on the type of product you have.
Here are some steps involved in the BMC molding process:

Mixing

Resin, fillers, catalysts, stabilizers, and pigments are mixed together to create a viscous, putty-like compound.

Compression molding

The BMC is shaped by applying pressure and heat until it reacts. This process can handle complex shapes and is often used for high volume manufacturing.

Compression molding

The BMC is injected into a mold using a ram, ram-screw, or conventional reciprocating screw injection molding technique. Injection molding is an automatic process with a shorter cycle time than compression molding.

Frequently Asked Questions About BMC Molding

Each BMC molding method caters to specific manufacturing needs, whether it’s achieving precise dimensions, optimizing costs, or creating high-strength parts. At Yongchao, we specialize in all three BMC molding processes, offering customized solutions for automotive, electronics, and appliance industries.

☼ What is BMC (Bulk Molding Compound)?

Bulk moulding compound (BMC) or bulk molding composite is a ready to mold, glass-fiber reinforced thermoset polyester material primarily used in injection molding and compression molding. Developed with targeting precise housing, and it can be expected specific features below.
●Advanced dimensional accuracy
●Zero mold shrinkage rate
●Small linear expansion coefficient
●Dimensional stability at high temperature and high humidity
●Thermal deformation temperature of 200 degrees or more

☼ What is the process of BMC molding?

BMC molding is a manufacturing process that uses bulk molding compound (BMC) to produce high-strength, complex parts. The process involves the following steps:
Preparing the BMC material: BMC is made up of a mixture of chopp glass fibers, thermosetting resin, and various additives. The materials are combined and formed into a bulk compound.
Preparing the mold: A mold is prepared that matches the desired shape and size of the final product.
Loading the mold: The BMC material is loaded into the mold cavity, either manually or with an injection molding machine.
Applying heat and pressure: The mold is then closed, and heat and pressure are applied to the BMC material to compress it and force it to take the shape of the mold cavity.
Curing the material: The heat causes the thermosetting resin in the BMC material to cure and solidify, forming the finished part.
Ejecting the part: Once the part has cured and solidified, the mold is opened, and the finished part is ejected.
BMC molding is similar to other compression molding techniques but is specifically used for thermosetting plastics. The process can produce parts with a high degree of precision and consistency, and it is often used to produce electrical components, automotive parts, and industrial equipment.

☼ BMC Molding Types

Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) is a versatile thermoset material widely used in various industries such as automotive, electrical, and household appliances. Its adaptability allows it to be processed through three primary molding methods: Injection Molding,Transfer Molding, and Compression Molding. Each method offers distinct advantages, making BMC a preferred choice for manufacturing high-performance and durable components. Below is an in-depth look at the types of BMC molding and their unique characteristics. For components requiring high heat resistance and mechanical strength, SMC Molding is an excellent solution.

BMC Injection Molding

BMC injection molding is a high-efficiency process suitable for producing precise and aesthetically superior parts. This method is often used for large-scale production.

Advantages:

Cost-Efficient: Delivers a lower piece price due to high productivity rates.
High Output: Ideal for mass production with shorter cycle times.
Enhanced Appearance: Produces parts with excellent surface finishes.
Good Mechanical Strength: Ensures durability and reliability.

Applications:

Automotive components, electronic housings, and appliance parts requiring detailed designs and smooth finishes.

Process:

●Material is fed into a heated barrel.
●The mold closes, and the material is injected under high pressure.
●Once the material cures, the mold opens, and the part is ejected.

BMC Transfer Molding

BMC transfer molding is ideal for producing small to medium-sized components with intricate details and high strength. This method combines precision with cost-effectiveness.

Advantages:

Moderate Costs: A balance between tooling costs and part quality.
High Strength: Delivers parts with excellent mechanical and structural integrity.
Versatility: Suitable for manufacturing complex parts.

Applications:

Electrical insulators, switchgear components, and precision parts for industrial machinery.

Process:

●Pre-measured BMC material is placed into a transfer pot.
●Material is pushed into the mold cavities under pressure.
●After curing, the part is removed, and residual flash is trimmed.

BMC Compression Molding

Compression molding is one of the most widely used processes for BMC due to its ability to produce large and complex parts with high strength. This method applies heat and pressure simultaneously to shape the material.

Advantages:

High Strength: Creates robust components capable of withstanding extreme conditions.
Cost-Effective for Large Parts: Suitable for large and bulky items.
Eliminates Secondary Operations: Often eliminates the need for additional assembly steps.
Precision: Offers excellent dimensional stability and complex designs.

Applications:

Automotive structural parts, industrial panels, and large electrical components.

Process:

●A pre-weighed charge is placed into the mold cavity.
●The mold closes, applying pressure and heat to form the material.
●Once cured, the mold opens, and the part is ejected.
●Any excess flash is removed for a clean finish.
