BMC Mold Knowledge & Guides
A BMC mold refers to a mold used in the manufacturing process of "Bulk Molding Compound" (BMC), a thermosetting composite material made up of a resin (typically polyester), glass fibers, fillers, and additives, used in compression molding to create complex, strong, and dimensionally stable parts, often seen in automotive components, electrical enclosures, and appliance parts due to its high strength, heat resistance, and electrical insulation properties.
☼ What is BMC ?
The plastic component of BMC is usually polypropylene, but other types can also be used. The fiber component is usually glass, but can also be carbon or aramid fibers. The resulting substance from this combination can be processed into any shape and molded into any size desired.
Bulk molding compound(BMC) is a glass-fiber reinforced polymer material and is available in bulk bags as well as slug form. BMC is made up of a polymer resin, various inert fillers, fiber reinforcement, catalysts, stabilizers, and pigments that form a viscous. It is highly filled and reinforced with short fibers.
Depending on the end-use application, BMC is formulated to achieve superior mechanical properties, tight dimensional control, flame resistant, high dielectric strength, corrosion resistant and superior strength. Its excellent flow characteristics make bulk molding compound suited to a wide variety of applications, and is available in a wide variety of colors.
☼ What Is BMC Mold?
BMC is bulk molding compound.
BMC mold used a thermoset plastic made up of a polymer resin, various inert fillers, fiber reinforcement, catalysts, stabilizers, and pigments that form a viscous. It is highly filled and reinforced with short fibers.
BMC is available in bulk bags as well as slug form. The mixing operation can be done in a number of ways. There are three methods for combining glass with paste: a continuous screw mixer, a sigma blade mixer and a plough blade mixer. The process chosen is dependent upon specific product properties, product form and volume.
Depending on the end-use application, compounds are formulated to achieve tight dimensional control, flame resistance, high dielectric strength, corrosion and stain resistance and color stability. Its excellent flow characteristics make BMC mold well suited to a wide variety of applications requiring precision in detail and dimensions. The material is available in a wide variety of colors.
Besides, BMC mold is suitable for either compression molding or injection molding. Compressing molding of BMC is used to produce complex components such as electrical equipment, car components, housings for electrical appliances and tools, in large industrial volumes.
☼ Key Points About BMC Molds:
Material composition:
BMC is a dough-like material, where short glass fibers are mixed with a resin system, fillers, and additives, allowing for high flexibility in tailoring the material's properties based on the application.
Molding process:
BMC is typically molded using compression molding, where the material is placed into the heated mold cavity and compressed under pressure to achieve the desired shape.
Design considerations:
BMC molds need to be designed with features like proper draft angles, vent channels, and parting lines to ensure smooth material flow and easy part removal.
☼ Key Considerations for BMC Mold Design and Optimization
BMC mould design follows similar rules as for any other production process with the plastic industry. But before you build a SMC mould, there are certain things need to be considered. The first and most important is shear edge.
Mould shrinkage
There are two shrinkage for BMC mould. Low profile class A part have a shrinkage of -0.05% to 0%.
Temperature system
BMC need heating channel instead of cooling. The working temperature of the mould is usually at 140 degree to 160 degree. When designing the temperature systme it is important to keep surface temperature within very close parameters. Mould will fill easier and produce parts with less warpage, and uniform surface appearance. The The mould can be heated by steam, or oil, or electricity or even high pressure water.
Vacuum System
To achieve a better appearance of part will require vacuum assistance. For more information please contact our techinician
